Surat vehicle thief arrested

SURAT, April 11: The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of the district police on Sunday claimed to have arrested a person who is confessed to have stolen three motorcycles and two video cassette recorders (VCRs) in a span of one year.

The accused, one Paresh Ratilal Patel, originally a resident of Saras village of Olpad taluka and presently residing at Shivavaas Society beside Kamrej Char Rasta, was arrested on Saturday evening and has been remanded to custody, the police added.

According to LCB PI, S A Sardar, Patel, who was riding a motorcycle, numbered GJ 5 JJ 6331, was intercepted by the LCB personnel during routine vehicle checking at Surti Zhaapa area of Bardoli as he did not possess the licence or the registration paper of the vehicle.

But after further interrogations, Patel confessed that he had stolen the vehicle using duplicate keys from Mini Bazaar area of Surat a fortnight ago and that its real registration number was GJ 5 QQ 60. He also revealed that he had already sold the vehicle to one Sanjay Halpati of Bardoli.

The accused also confessed to have stolen another motorcycle from Linear Bus Stand area of the city and sold it to one Amit Modi of Ravi Auto garage at Kadodara after putting a fake registration number (GJ 5 K 514) on it.

The vehicle was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon, the police said adding that Patel had also stolen another motorcycle from the parking of Bardoli Sugar Faotory in January this year, which was also seized.

The police have also taken into possession two VCRs that Patel stole from Navin Electricals at Lal Darwaja area of the city and at Trupti Electronics in Bardoli.

The raids were supervised by DSP V M Pargi and carried out by LCB PI S A Sardar, PSI S G Yadav and other constables.
