One held in graft case
An accounts clerk of the Irrigation Department-IV K B Modi was caught redhanded by sleuths of the Anti Corruption Bureau on Monday while accepting a bribe of Rs 500 from a driver. According to details, Rajendra Motibhai Rai, driver of the department's official car, had submitted a bill of Rs 1,023 to Modi regarding minor repairs of the car in the second and third week of March 1999. However, Modi allegedly refused to sanction the amount. When the driver went again to him for payment, Modi allegedly demanded Rs 500, saying that he had released all his previous payments without any `charges'. The driver meanwhile contacted ACB who laid a trap and arrested Modi. The trap was laid by ACB inspectors P P Kanani and Vajrangsinh Gohil and other staff members.

Man duped
One Mukesh Shriram Chandra Sharma, a resident of Palamgram in New Delhi, who had come to the city on a business trip was duped by two unidentified persons on Jetalpur Road on Sunday evening, the J P Road police said. According to the complaint, the accused, in plain clothes, identified themselves as police personnel and insisted on checking Sharma's bag. But after they left, Sharma realised that his purse containing Rs 7,500 had been stolen from the bag. The J P Road police have a registered a case and are investigating.

Chain snatching
Two unidentified miscreants riding a scooter forcibly snatched a gold chain from the neck of one Pushpaben Mohanlal Patel, residing at Sardar Nagar Society in Chhani on Sunday, and escaped, the police said. Burglaryn CASH of Rs 2.8 lakh and gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 14,000 were stolen from one Piyushbhai Ranaklal Patwa's house, located at Premal Park Society on Ajwa Road, the police said. According to the police, miscreants entered the house by removing the grills, broke open the cupboard and escaped with the booty. A case under Section 457/380 IPC has been registered.

Vehicles stolen
A tanker (GRX 7005) containing caustic soda worth Rs 57,000 was stolen from Ranoli village on Sunday, the police said. According to a complaint lodged by the vehicle-owner, Mangalkumar Bhagmal Uppal, a resident of Ranoli, the tanker was parked outside his house. The Jawaharnagar police has registered a case and is investigating. In another case, a Hero Honda motorcycle (GJ-6-F-298) worth Rs 20,000, was stolen from outside the Hansa Mehta Library of the M S University, between 7 pm and 7.45 pm.
