VADODARA, April 11: Routine functioning of the district collectorate was badly disrupted here on Monday with over 400 class III revenue officials of the district collectorate beginning their indefinite strike. Admitting disruption, an administration spokesman said that though about two dozen employees besides revenue staff had been called from other departments to carry out the work, Panchayat officials did not turn up expressing their solidarity with the striking staff.A large number of people with pending work in the collectorate could be seen running from pillar to post. A representative of an industrialist who was dealing with a case of alleged pollution against his company said on condition of anonymity that``the strike had only furthered the lethargic functioning of the government machinery''. Two panchayat members from Sindhrot who had come for a grant for their village too had to return empty handed. They were told to come only when the strike ended.
Statewide, about 10,000 employees of the State Revenue Class III Employees' Federation went on strike to press the government to accept their demands, even as their representatives planned meeting with the State government fell through as the former sought the presence of Revenue minister Vajubhai Vala.
Leaders of the district unit of the federation including Natwarsinh Vansdiya told Express Newsline that since the meeting had not taken place till night, their strike would continue. On Monday, a group of employees staged a dharna in front of collectorate and latter submitted a memorandum to collector Anil Mukim.
The employees were agitating for promotions of class II employees to the post of Deputy Mamlatdar and filling of vacancies, among other things. It may be recalled that the revenue employees had also gone on a mass casual leave for the same demands on April 5.
