Desecration of temple raises communal spectre
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, April 13: Communal passions threatened to raise their head again in South Gujarat after a fortnight-long lull following the desecration of an idol in the Sindhai village of Vansda taluka in the neighbouring Navsari district. According to police sources, the head of a Bharimata idol was found lying on the road in front of the temple on Monday. Though senior officials, including the district collector and the district superintendent of police, went to the spot apprehending trouble, the situation was peaceful.DSP Amarsinh Vasava said patrolling had been intensified in the village as a precautionary measure. He insisted, however, that the incident was not communal. The Sindhai village populace comprises people of all major faiths. Last year, the Vansda town had witnessed clashes between Hindus and Muslims. But the recent Hindu-Christian clashes had had no impact on the taluka, though Sindhai is close to Unai, where Christians were reconverted earlier this year.
