Sena, Dalits clash over flag; 25 hurt

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
AURANGABAD, APRIL 16: Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse Shiv Sena and Dalit activists indulging in stone-throwing at the Subhaschandra sports ground at Vithalwadi in CIDCO area last night, according to Police Commissioner Shirpad Kulkarni.

Kulkarni said at least 25 people, including seven policemen, were injured in lathi-charge and stone-pelting. Seven of those seriously injured were admitted to the Aurangabad Government Medical Hospital.

Kulkarni said 11 people, including Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party activists, on the charge of creating a riotous situation in the city. Three cases were also registered against them for damage to private property, he said.

He said some Dalits in the locality had raised a blue flag in the vicinity of the sports ground, to which the Shiv Sena activists took objection on Tuesday. The Dalits got provoked when they saw their flag forcibly removed by some Shiv Sena activists. However, CIDCO officials intervened and put the flag back in place.

However, ShivSena activists condemned the CIDCO officials' action, and both the groups threw stones at each other. The groups also damaged a number of homes in the locality.

Deputy Mayor Bhagwat Karad and Republican Party of India vice-president Gangadhar Gade met the police commissioner and urged him to take action against those who removed the flag and damaged homes.

A heavy police patrol has been maintained in the CIDCO area and other sensitive parts of the city as a precaution, he said, adding that no untoward incident took place since last night and the situation in the CIDCO area was peaceful.
