CHANDIGARH, April 16: The pupils of Yadavindra Public School, S.A.S. Nagar, have come forward to help victims of the Chamoli earthquake.A team of six students, accompanied by two house-masters, will start for Chamoli tomorrow where they will distribute ration and blankets among victims.
The pupils have bought 55 quintal of ration from Rs 80,163 collected over a period of one week. They went from door to door in Chandigarh, S.A.S. Nagar and Panchkula to collect the ration and money.
Talking about the experience of fund collecting, Nav Bhardwaj says, ``Almost everybody felt the pain of the earthquake victims and donated a minimum of Rs 100 to Rs 1100. We used to go on bicycles every day after school and used to be back at 8.30 p.m.''
School Principal H. S. Dhillon says, ``The initiative to help victims came from students. We are also trying to raise a permanent fund collected over a long period of time to extend instant help to the needy.''
As a part of the curriculum from this year, class XI and XII will work at least six to ten hours a year for some social cause.
Education is meaningless if it is unable to generate humanity and compassion for the poor and needy, feels Dhillon.
The team of pupils going to Chamoli comprises Varun Kalra, Nav Bhardwaj, Amanpreet Singh Bains, Ashok, Sandeep Bal, Rishib Rai. They will be accompanied by two teachers Bhupinder Mann and Harsh Mohan.
