Workers' demands
A delegation of UT Building Maintenance Workers Union, Chandigarh, today called upon Jagdish Sagar, Advisor to the Administration, to discuss their demands. The demands included release of bonus for 1997-98, regularisation of daily-wagers and grant of DA, uniforms and conveyance allowance to Class III and field staff. They also urged him to abolish the contract system, allot Type I government accommodation to workers of C.P. Division-III and fill up the various vacant posts.Meet postponed
The Senior Citizens Federation North Zone Conference which was scheduled to be hosted by the Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association in the PGI auditorium on Sunday has been postponed, said association secretary general Manmohan Singh Walia in a statement issued today.
Mourned
The faculty, staff and students of the Department of History have expressed shock and grief over the death of historian Prof R. C. Jauhri on April 8, who headed the department from 1980 to 1983, a press release said.
Workshop ends
A two-day seminar cum workshop on ``Micro-teaching skills'' conducted by Dr B. K. Passi (chairperson UNESCO) and Dr Subhasini Passi (director ICT, Indore) at the Dev Samaj College for Education, concluded today. In all, 44 educationists from the city and all over Punjab participated in the workshop.
Education centre
NIIT has launched a new education centre in S.A.S. Nagar, Phase 7, which offers a host of career programmes including GNIT. This is the fifth NIIT centre within the Chandigarh region.
Cong leader elected
Congress leader Jagat Bhushan Sharma has been elected president in the Barhari Market Association election. Sharma defeated Naresh Kumar by a margin of 158 votes. He got 165 while Kumar got seven. Amarchand Sharma was elected to the post of general secretary.
Fire in Sec 22 shop
A fire broke out in a shop-cum-office in Sector 22 here this afternoon. Sources said the fire was minor and no loss to life and property was reported.
The fire apparently was caused by a short-circuit. Fire tenders controlled it within a few minutes.
