Two suicides, 1 attempted suicide

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 16: Two cases of suicide and one of attempted suicide were reported in the Capital in the last 24 hours. In a fourth case, a woman was brought into Safdarjung hospital from Mehrauli with severe burn injuries. The police is still to determine how she got burnt.

A 25-year-old security guard shot himself in the head with his service revolver in his Mandoli Extension home in Nand Nagri, north east Delhi, early this morning. Jagdish Singh, who works as a security guard in Jehangirpuri, recently rented a house at 4/130 Mandoli Extension. In fact, he and his wife moved into their new home only last evening.

At around 7.45 a.m. today, Jagdish shot himself. No suicide note was recovered. According to the police, while the immediate cause of suicide is not known, Jagdish was said to be going through some tension recently.

In the second incident, 22-year-old Murgan hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his Jal Vihar home in Lajpat Nagar this morning. The incident occurred at around 6.48 a.m. According to the police, Murgan was allegedly an alcoholic and lived alone. The immediate provocation for suicide is still unknown.

Meanwhile, at around 10.45 p.m. yesterday, a 25-year-old bachelor set himself on fire in his Dakshinpuri home in Ambedkar Nagar. Sant Ram was rushed to the Safadrjung Hospital with 80 per cent burns. His condition is critical and he is battling for life.

The police said that Sant Ram was depressed as his sister's marriage recently broke up. She was married three years ago and recently returned to her parent's home. According to the police, Sant Ram ate his dinner last night, then went to his room on the top floor of the house, poured kerosene on himself and lit a match. His parents saw the flames and rushed to rescue him.

The fourth case remains mysterious. A 26-year-old woman was brought into Safdarjung Hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries early this morning. The family told the police that Shivati was cooking in her Chhattarpur home when her clothes caught fire. The police are now verifying whether it was an accident, suicide or attempt to murder.
