Feast from the coast

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
If you are looking out for homely Malwani food, check out on Konkanratna, located bang opposite the General Post Office (GPO). No flashy interiors here, but when crispy fried fish or a thali comprising fish curry and bhakri arrives at your table, be sure you are in for a delicious treat.

Konkanratna has an image of serving good quality coastal cuisine. Its fried fish and fried prawns are the most popular items followed by their chicken, mutton and fish thalis. At prices that are reasonable, and food that comes fresh and within a short time, it is the ideal place, for breaking the monotony of the usual Punjabi and Chinese dishes.

Though Konkanratna, of late has diversified into the Punjabi cuisine too, we recommend that you try out their Malwani dishes.

We ordered `Pomfret fish fry boneless' which was of course very fresh, but was crispy as well with a fine dash of red chilli powder. The fish thali comprised a fish fry, extra katori of gravy, three chappatis, rice and solkadi (a concoction of coccum and coconut milk which is also said to be digestive, besides being a tasty drink).

The special chicken thali too was interesting with a chicken curry, an alu-methi vegetable, solkadi, a katori of extra gravy, rice and three chapatis. In fact you could opt for bhakris or wade, if you are bored of chappatis.

Konkanratna also serves chicken, mutton and fish biryani. It also takes home- orders of biryani priced at Rs 225 per kg of rice.

Unarguably, it is the much sought-after fish delicacies that brings clients from various parts of the city to Konkanratna. During lunch hour, various government offices in its vicinity, are its regular customers. Whether, it is the Bombay Duck, surmai or the pomfret, Konkanratna promises high quality stuff. Try their very well made Prawns fry masala which has prawns dipped in sumptuous thick, red gravy. Chicken suke meaning dry chicken contains one piece of chicken covered with a thick coat of gravy.

Punjabi food is aplenty, comprising the usual vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes like butter chicken, palak paneer, paneer masala and others. For egg lovers, there's a variety in store. To patronise more visitors who may not be too fond of Malwani food, Konkanratna ensures that it appeals to everyone who visits it.

Undoubtedly, though, it is in the friendly steel thalis and katoris where tempting pieces of fish float in rich coconut gravy, that Konkanratna makes its mark.
