Badal, Chautala on a mission

Aasha Khosa
NEW DELHI, APRIL 16: Having wrested support of four member Indian National Lok Dal (INDL) led by Om Prakash Chautala, for the BJP-led government for the crucial trial of strength in the Lok Sabaha on Saturday, Akali Dal leader and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is aiming at wooing other fence-sitters like the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Chautala's volte face on support to the government comes in the wake of Badal's ``persuasive discussions'' with the INDL leader in the morning. Sources close to the Punjab Chief Minister said the duo were now ``working on winning back support of others, particularly the BSP''.

Announcing his decision to extend his party's support to the BJP government once again, Chautala said he did not want to facilitate the return of Congress into power. He said at the moment the Opposition was unclear about its strategy and plans about the alternatives in the event of the government's fall and that forced him to take this decision.

Chautala was flanked by Badal and his sonand Union Minister of State for Industries Sukhbir Singh Badal during the press conference.

The INDL leader said although he was against the BJP government for their ``anti farmer'' moves for hiking the prices of the fertilizers and other essential commodities, he considered Congress a ``bigger evil''. ``If my refusal to support the BJP government facilitates the return of Congress, for me it will be a no win situation.''

The Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who had dashed to Delhi on a mission to rally support for the beleaguered BJP government, is now working in tandem with Chautala to win back the support of the BSP, which has five members in the Lok Sabha and are yet to spell their decision clearly.

The Punjab Chief Minister had reportedly been able to prevail on Chautala, a ``family friend'' by stressing upon the theory of ``Congress conspiracy to return to power''. Chautala and Badal together are now working on the same anti-Congress plank to rope in more allies for the BJP in thecrucial hours before the trial of strength in the Lok Sabha, sources said.
