The police nabbed a stock broker for cheating a city builder of his blue chip scrips worth Rs 16 lakh recently. The fraud was detected when the owner of Lakdawala Hotels and Construction Ltd asked his manager Mukesh Vyas to clarify the company's shares status. the owner discovered that about 13,100 shares of four reputed companies valued around Rs 16,04,400 had been misappropriated. According to officials attached to Lakdawala Constructions, Vyas had been hired in 1996 exclusively for buying and selling the company's shares. A complaint was lodged at Khar police station in the first week of April, and Vyas was arrested on charges of committing fraud, the police informed.

Career mapping developed

A unique career opportunity mapping process has been devised by Indian Education Society's (IES) management college and research centre and have achieved 100 per cent summer placements giving exposure to students in blue-chip companies.

The centre'sdirector Shrikar Kulkarni said that the institute proposes to share the innovative career opportunity mapping with other management college students so that the industry benefits and academic fine-tuning will be possible in other management colleges also.

Basic mobile services soon

ICO Global Communications is developing the market in satellite-based basic mobile (personal phone) services, aimed at workers and residents of rural and remote areas in India. ICO is all set to launch its services in the third quarter of 2000, and as a part of the basic mobile phone services will offer digital voice, data, fax and a suite of messaging services.

Senior vice-president and general manager, ICO-India, Dr Bishnu Pradhan said that the service will have application usage for sectors like oil, construction and engineering and also non-government organisations working in rural areas. Farmers and other entrepreneurs in remote areas will also be benefited from these services. This a critical segment for ICO andone which we believe has huge potential in India because of the large landscape of the country, he said while addressing a seminar on satellite-based mobile (personal phone) services jointly hoisted by ICO and major Indian player, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

Exotic fish exhibition

For the first time in Mumbai, an exhibition of rare exotic aquarium fishes is being organised to promote the hobby among Mumbaikars. Organised by the Water World Club the Live Fish Show - 1999', which is being held at the Ruia College at Matunga (E), has a collection of rare fishes which have been specially flown in from Singapore. Apart from this, exhibitors have also come from Calcutta, Delhi and Madras. Secretary of the club, Pankaj Mungekar said that among the rare fishes include Cardinal Tetra, Talking Catfish, Anaconda Eels, Halfbeaks, Crocodile Gar, Naked Catfish. Over 100 varieties of fishes are displayed here. Aquarium experts are also providing with the details to maintain an aquarium properly.

Memoriallecture at university

The Department of Civics and Politics of the University of Mumbai will organise the Late Dasturzada Doctor Jal Pavry Endowment Memorial Lecture for the year 1998-99. Justice S Radhakrishnan will deliver a lecture on `International Peace and Understanding', on April 20 at 6 pm at Sir Cowasji Jehangir Hall, Fort campus. Chief Justice Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal will preside over the lecture.
