Threat to blacken BEST buses
The Mumbai Pradesh Youth Congress has threatened to blacken all BEST buses if they are painted saffron. Condemning the decision of Transport Minister Divakar Raote to change the colour of all BEST buses from their existing red to saffron, Youth Congress President Charan Singh Sapra said applying saffron paint to the BEST buses was only a ploy to divide people of two different communities.

Instead of wasting the crores of rupees on changing the colour, the funds should be utilised to purchase new buses and the proper maintenance of the existing fleet, Sapra suggested.

UMC polls: HC admits plea
The High Court today admitted the petition of Hardas Makhija, the Congress corporator in the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) seeking judicial intervention in the dispute over the mayoral poll held on Tuesday.

In the controversial polls, Shiv Sena-supported independent candidate Kumar Ailani was elected Ulhasnagar Mayor by a margin of just one vote after thecivic secretary's decision declaring his rival Hardas Makhija was reversed by Mayor Yashaswini Naik. The mayor not only refused to sign the returning officer's statement, but also ruled that one vote cast in Hardas Makhija's favour was invalid. She then proceeded to cast her own vote in Ailani's favour.

Vendors' stir called off
The Navi Mumbai Vritta Patra Sangh today called off its three-day strike on Thursday after most of their demands were met by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. In a deal brokered by Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has agreed to let the vendors keep their stalls open between 7 am and 11 am and later 4 pm and 9 pm. The corporation has also agreed to let the vendors stock newsmagazines.
