One killed, 2 hurt in land dispute

SAS NAGAR, April 22: In a firing incident yesterday night, one person was killed and two injured in Sekhomajra village under Sohana police station. Land dispute is said to be the cause of crime.

According to an FIR registered in the police station here by Gurdeep Singh, son of Sarvan Singh, Gurdeep Singh has alleged that when the panchyat tried to stop Gurmakh Singh and those accompanying him, from cutting wheat crop grown on shamlat land, the latter (Gurmakh Singh) opened fire killing Avtar Singh Panch and injuring two others.

The panchyat had won the case against him from a Kharar court. According to the police Gurmukh Singh is absconding and a case has been registered against him under sections 302, 307, 323, 148 and 149.

Small savings
Chandigarh Region collected Rs 66 crores through small savings during the financial year 1989-99 against the target of Rs 22 crores. This was stated by UT Home and Finance Secretary Anuradha Gupta who was the chief guest at the Mahila Bachat Divas celebrated here today.

The credit goes to the efficient mahila pradhans and agents of the region, she said. She added that if similar efforts are made in the current year, the collection may rise to Rs 80 crore.

Small Savings regional director P.C. Ekka stated that 7,000 mahila pradhans in Chandigarh had collected Rs 200 crore last year. UT Joint Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, Finance, said that women agents played a key role in increasing the savings amount.
