Alcoholic husband leads woman to suicide

PUNE, April 22: Alice Shantaran Pirpagare (30) of Nigdi committed suicide by setting herself on fire early on Wednesday due to alleged harassment by her alcoholic husband.

Alice's husband Shantaram (35), who also suffered high degree burns while trying to rescue the housewife, has been admitted to Sassoon Hospital. Meanwhile, the Nigdi police have filed a case accusing Shantaram of harassing Alice and abetting her suicide.

Police said Alice had married Shantaram, who works as a tailor, about 10 years back. The couple used to quarrel often as Alice did not approve Shantaram's alcoholism. About five years back, Alice separated from Shantaram and moved the family court. She returned to Shantaram's house after working out a settlement a year-and-a-half ago, according to sub-inspector Sunil Gharge who is investigating the case.

Sub-inspector Gharge said Alice quarrelled with Shantaram after he returned home in an inebriated condition on Tuesday night. Frustrated, she set herself afire shortly after midnight, he added.

Housewife found dead: Sarala Motilal Lodha, a 42-year-old housewife from Archana Nagar housing society in Pandavnagar, was yesterday found dead at Hadapsar under mysterious circumstances.

Sarla Lodha's dead body was found floating in Mutha Right Bank Canal near Shankar Maharaj Math in Hadapsar in the afternoon. Circumstances leading to her death could not be ascertained till late on Wednesday evening. A case of accidental death has been filed in this connection.

Burglary: Booty estimated to be worth over Rs 21,000 was stolen from a tobacco shop in Ganesh Peth.

Cash and tobacco products, totally estimated to be valued at over Rs 21,000 were stolen from the Rajani Traders shop which was found burgled in downtown Ganesh Peth on Tuesday morning.

The shop owner, K G Tirdhani of Pimpri, has lodged a first information report at Khadak police station saying the unidentified thieves forced entry into the shop after removing its tin roof. Cash of Rs 21,456 was stolen from rtwood shop which was found burgled at Timber Market in Bhavani Peth.
