RAJKOT, April 22: Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel inaugurated the Subhash Chandra Bose bridge on Thursday which has been built in place of the 112-year-old Victoria bridge on the outskirts of Jamnagar city. The Victoria Bridge linking the city with Rajkot highway was demolished after it developed cracks and was proving to be too narrow for heavy traffic.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister praised the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation for finishing this work. He said that Jamnagar has gained an important place in the list of industrial cities of the State and such a bridge was required. He also said that the government has designed a project to develop the ports of the State. "Jamnagar city should compete with Mumbai and not with neighbouring Rajkot," he said.
Municipal commissioner Sunanya Tomar said that the old Victoria Bridge had developed cracks at many places and the bridge was also too narrow for which two heavy vehicles used to find it difficult to pass through at the same time. The new bridge is 19.85 m wide and 333 m long. It was finished in 22 months at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore.
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for the housing scheme for urban poor in Jamnagar.
