Bangalore, April 22: Blame it on the cyclonic depression or Bangalore's April showers, the rains that swept the Sadashivanagar Club right through Thursday afternoon were unwelcome for the organisers of the club's AITA All India ranking tennis tournamentJust half-a-dozen matches were gone through this morning before the skies opened up with a light drizzle at 12 noon. But it never let up after that and by the time it eased off late in the evening it left in shambles not just the schedule, but also the courts and the shamiana.
Today, in the girls under-16 quarterfinals, Tamil Nadu's Samrita Shekar, seeded second was fully stretched by Andhra Pradesh's Sania Mirza. The Tamil Nadu girl won the extended first set 7-5, but lost the second 4-6. She had to dig deep into her reserves to clinch the third 7-5, and with it a berth in the semifinals.
Top seeded C Nandita, also of Tamil Nadu had no such problem as she crushed Maharashtra's Lata Assudani, the fifth seed, in straight sets. Also winning in straightsets was local girl Shireen Yusuf who got the better of S Sandra.
In the boys section, top seeded CS Mohanty of Delhi won a place in the Under-16 semifinals with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Maharashtra's Vivek Jhaveri. In the unfinished matches, second seed Amanjot Singh of Delhi was leading Bharati Das (TN) 6-2, 1-2 and third seeded Rohan Gajjar of Maharashtra was up 3-2 against Jaco Mathew (TN) when the rains came down to halt further play for the day.
