Chinese welcome US defeat in UNHCR

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BEIJING, APRIL 24: China today welcomed the defeat of a US-sponsored resolution at United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNHCR), which criticised Beijing's rights policies, its alleged abuses, unfair trials and increased restrictions in Tibet.

Expressing gratitude to countries which supported Beijing's stand, including India, foreign ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said Washington's solitary position at UNCHR has been firmly opposed by China and a large number of developing countries.

The vote carried out on Friday in the 53-member forum on the Chinese no action motion showed 22 states being in favour and 17 against, with 14 abstentions. China's supporters included Russia, India and Pakistan. It was the eighth time that the UNCHR has defeated an anti-China resolution since 1990, the first session that followed the violent crackdown against pro-democracy demonstrators Tiananmen square here in June 1989.

The widely circulated daily, sun also said that even the European Union (EU) and some westerncountries had not joined the US efforts to censure China this year.

The US motion had expressed concern about abuses, singling out unfair trials, harsh sentences and increased restrictions in Tibet. Criticising the US for tabling the resolution, sun accused US of using the human rights issue to suit its partisan domestic politics.
