MUMBAI: Two persons, including a schoolgirl, were killed and seven others injured, few of them seriously, in a suspected gas cylinder explosion at the Ravi Kiran building of new MHB colony, Borivali (West) on Saturday afternoon. The explosion also led to a minor fire. Eye-witnesses claimed that the explosion, which sounded like a bomb, was so severe that it shook the foundation of the building.

Mexico mishap

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ: At least 46 people were killed and nine injured Friday when a cargo truck carrying passengers crashed into a ravine in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Rescue workers are still at the site looking for more victims and officials fear the number of dead could increase.

Abducted infant

PALAKKAD: A six-day-old baby boy, who was allegedly abducted from the government hospital here and sold to a childless couple at Mannarkkad, near here, for a sum of Rs 602, was traced and handed over to his mother yesterday, police said. Afive-member gang, including two women, have been taken into custody by the police.

Chennai: Narain Karthikeyan made history on Saturday when he became the first Indian ever to occupy pole position in a recognised international motor race as the 23-year old from Coimbatore clocked the fastest in the qualifying session for the fourth round of the Autosport British Formula-3 championship at the Brands Hatch circuit.

Indian team in UK

LONDON: The Indian cricket team arrived here today to start their warm up training for the World Cup. The team was given a rousing welcome at Gatwick airport by the Indian community here. The team later left for Leicester, where they will play warm-up games against English county teams before the actual action starts on May 14.

Bhatts bereaved

MUMBAI: Veteran producer-director Nanabhai Bhatt passed away Friday evening. He was 87. Nanabhai Bhatt, who made over a hundred films, started his career in the early thirties with Muqabala.Among his most notables movies were Mr X, Zimbo Comes to Town, Kangan and Lal Qila. He is survived by five daughters and four sons, including Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt.

Heat wave

NEW DELHI: At least 40 people, 28 of them in Orissa alone, have died so far due to heat wave which has tightened its grip over several parts of the country.
