Another schoolboy mafia cracked

HOUSTON: Crude bombs, gunpowder and details on how to make bombs were seized from the homes of three students who allegedly were plotting to kill students and teachers, investigators said on Saturday. The boys, along with two other students at Danforth Junior High School, were taken into custody Friday and charged with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit arson and conspiracy to manufacture explosives, authorities said.

Mangeshkar awards

NASIK: Noted historian Basbasaheb Purandare, Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar and classical singer Pandit C R Vyas were among the eminent personalities honoured with Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Awards here last night. At a glittering function, Lata Mangeshkar handed over the awards to the recipients including Prof Ram Shevalkar, noted social worker, Bhausaheb Thorat and drama producer, Manohar Kulkarni.

Chamoli rocked

NEW DELHI: An earthquake of slight intensity was felt in Chamoli districtof Uttar Pradesh today at about 1522 hrs, the met office said here. The earthquake, measuring three degree on the Richter scale, had its epicentre in the hills of Chamoli district which has experienced several tremors since March 29.

Carl Hooper retires

BRIDGETOWN: West Indian cricketer Carl Hooper has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, team manager Clive Lloyd said today. Lloyd said Hooper broke the news to team members yesterday after the sixth one-day match against Australia, which the visitors won by four wickets.

Flights' snag

KOCHI/BHOPAL: Passengers aboard two flights -- Chennai-Kochi-Chenna Indian Airlines and Delhi-Bhopal-Mumbai Alliance Air -- had a miraculous escape when the two planes developed snags. While the IA plane had technical problems soon after it landed at the Kochi airport this afternoon, the Alliance Air plane was brought immediately after it took off .
