GUWAHATI, APRIL 25: Insurgents activities may not be grabbing the headlines in the North-East for the time being, but a new war has been intensified by them in Cyberspace. From the trigger of Kalaskinovs, their fingers have shifted to the mouse and computer keyboard unleashing a virtual blitzkrieg against the Indian Army and the state. The authorities are yet to respond in kind to this assault. The NSCN was the pioneer in this regard having set up their website long time ago with a map of greater Nagaland on display. The ULFA, a relatively late comer in the field, is also fast catching up.
Almost all the sites give a brief account about the entire movement and activities beside general information of the particular areas they operate.Opened in the domain of the geocites.com, the ULFA, Prepak, Revolutionary Peoples Front (RPF) of Manipur and the Tripura People Democratic Front (TPDF) sites are interlinked with each having a separate button for the other. The NSCN site is based on the angelfire.com and theywere the first to realize the immense advantage of a web site.
Besides regular updating of these sites by professional hands, even the major press releases are also available in the net and the insurgent leaders are using it to air their opinion on occasions like Republic Day and Independence Day beside their respective raising days.
The NSCN has in fact maintained a detailed account of each of the alleged human right violation cases in Nagaland and Manipur.
The Army authorities, initially not giving much of importance to the new tactics, have realised that in this international propaganda war, the insurgents have got an upper hand.
The ULFA's website not only provides all information about Assam, including economic status, it also gives details on the positioning of the Army units up to the divisional level in the entire North-East.
The CRPF and Border Security Forces units are also being tracked and their bases documented by the ULFA in the web page. The NSCN seems to be the most meticulous of allproviding a map of the ``greater Nagaland'' they are trying to ``liberate.''
The websites of the other insurgent groups, are also packed with information on the state's economy, literacy, power generation culture and tradition along with the evolution of the entire organization.
The ULFA website welcome the visitors with a map of the seven sisters of the North-East.
There are also sub sections such as the social history of Assam, history of Assam, pain and sorrow of Assam, what is ULFA and the deployment of forces in Assam.
Similarly the Tripura People Democratic Front has sections like ``The land'', ``The people'' and ``The struggle.''
Interestingly, except for the NSCN, all the other four websites are hosted by the same organisation as they are under the same domain of the geocites.com.
Asked whether the Army is contemplating any steps to combat the cyber warfare, like in the case of Jammu and Kashmir where they too have websites to counter the propaganda, an officer pleaded ignorance.
