The police later traced Sanjay down and he reportedly confessed to having raped the girl and later murdered her by smashing her head with a heavy stone in the nearby forest. The battered body of the girl was recovered later. The head of the girl had been crushed between two heavy stones to avoid identification and there were injury marks all over her body.

According to the police, the accused is an illiterate and is unemployed. He was reportedly living away from his wife and child and his relations with his wife are strained. His wife is living at her parent's house, the police said.
