List of nominees to governing bodies gets university's nod

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 30: With the state education ministry finally sending a list of nominees for governing bodies of the 28 administration-run colleges to Delhi University, the Executive Council has given its seal of approval today. The nominees will in office for one year. It was six months ago that the Congress government had withdrawn their predecessor's nominees resulting in the dissolution of governing bodies.

Apart from being responsible for the recruitment of teaching staff, the governing bodies look after college administration. Be it appointment of lecturers, extension of their term or chalking out syllabi, the decisions come through these bodies.

While colleges with morning and evening shifts have 12 members on the governing body, single-shift colleges have 10 members. Half of these are nominees of the university and the remaining are selected by the Delhi government.

The withdrawal of nominees by the Congress government had raised eyebrows as academicians considered it ``intervention for political benefits''. Over the years, members of governing bodies have comprised politicians, farmers, journalists, advocates and social workers. Representatives come from all fields but academics. Though university guidelines maintain a minimum level of educational qualifications for governing body members, this rule is often violated.

The Executive Council members, today, also approved recommendations of the Academic Council on the introduction of courses including M Tech in environmental and natural resource management, employment-oriented courses under faculty of interdisciplinary, applied social sciences and humanities, a postgraduate diploma programme in global business operations.
