Two killed in mishap
Solapur: Two persons were killed on the spot and nine others injured when a jeep they were travelling in collided with a private luxury bus coming from opposite direction at Duffrin chowk, early Tuesday morning.

The jeep (MH 04/ Q 107) was on its way to Gulbarga.

The deceased were later identified as Mallappa Mallayya, 40, of Lonavla and Ganjendra Mane of Shirur in Pune district, police later said. The injured have been admitted to the civil hospital here.

Janaseva Mandal sweeps polls
Ahmednagar: The Janaseva Mandal lead by State Agriculture Minister, also the guardian minister of Ahmednagar Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil swept the polls for Srirampur taluka agriculture produce market committee on Monday. The Janaseva Mandal won 14 of the 17 seats. The rest three went to a panel led by Congress MLA Bhanudas Murkute and Raosaheb Mhaske.

This is the first time that the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena have entered the agriculture produce market committee arena in this taluka.

Dinkar Pawar of Janaseva Mandal contesting from service organisations constituency won the highest of 490 votes.

Sangamner sugar coop polls
Ahmednagar: The voting for the 24-member board of directors of the Sangamner sugar cooperative was peaceful on Tuesday. The polling stations in all the six regions were under strict police vigil assisted by the State Reserve Police at Jorve and Dhandarphal.

The otherwise one-sided elections in favour of Congress MLA Balasaheb Thorat had received a twist with Congressman-turned-Shiv Sena MP Balasaheb Vikhe Patil taking interest in the electioneering.

Over 16,000 voters from Sakur, Jorve, Talegaon, Dhandarphal, Jawale, Ganore and Akole sections exercised their franchise, preliminary reports reaching here said.

Truck kills one, mows down huts
Pune: One person was killed and a bakery owner from Chakan grievously injured when a truck crashed into a Kinetic Honda and a Rajdoot motorcycle before mowing down a dozen huts in Kharabwadi hamlet, about 30 kms from here on the Pune-Nashik highway on Sunday afternoon.

The mishap took place after the truck driver (MH-04 34040), on its way to Talegaon Dhamdhere from Chakan, lost control. Gorakshnath Namdeo Gawte, a 30-year-old garage owner from Chakan, was killed instantaneously.

The owner of Chakan-based Hindustan Bakery, Naim Ahmed Ansari (40), was seriously injured. The labourers of the slum located along the road were attending a wedding at Kalchiwadi hamlet.

The driver fled the spot leaving the injured Naim in a pool of blood. About 15 minutes after the mishap, the drivers plying on the highway shifted him to Sassoon Hospital in Pune.
