Paras wins u-12 crown

CHANDIGARH, May 4: Paras Thakur beat Simranjeet Cheema 9-5 to win the under-12 boys title in the tennis tournament, which concluded at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) courts in Sector 10, here today.

Though the budding players, who sweated out on the court to gain the upper hand are yet to acquire the skill of the seasoned players, they depicted immense enthusiasm to play, which augur well for the game.

Both the finalist in the match today, played with zest and also smashed the ball hard. They were also engaged in short rallies. Some of the strokes were worth mentioning.

Seeing the enthusiasm among the participants in the meet, the CLTA is planning to conduct the tournament on monthly basis, which will also be open to players from other tennis centres in the city.

Football team
Poonam will lead the 18-member Chandigarh team in the seventh Women National football championship to be held at Shillong from May 8.

The other members of the team includes Neha, Anu, Asha, Sangeeta, Sangeeta Chauhan, Anu Chaudhary, Pooja, Sunita, Mandeep, Sumandeep Kaur, Pinky Sharma, Gagan Sidhu, Savneet Kaur, Preeti, Manpreet, Deepti Gabha and Manpreet.

Rakesh Bakshi and CP Malik will accompany the team as coach and manager, respectively. DK Sharma will be assistant coach of the team.

Kabaddi meet
The Punjab Amatuer Circle Kabaddi Association will organise tournament in both men's and women's group from June 11 to 13 at Chandigarh. According to a press release, during the meet men's team will be selected to take part in the Test matches to be held in Pakistan in September.

Adventure sports
The Chandigarh Adventure Association (CAA) will organise Chandigarh Adventure Festival from June 18 to 26. According to a press release, more than one hundred boys and girls from all over India are expected to take part in the nine-day event, which will include events like para sailing, rock climbing and trekking.

Entries close with Kulbir Singh Gaba, president CAA, SCF 25-26, Sector 22-C.

Skating Rink reopens
The Chandigarh Sports Department will re-open the Sector 10 Skating Rink for public use from tomorrow. The Rink, which was closed due to renovation work, will have training and coaching session in the morning and evening. The morning session will begin at 6.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m.. The evening session will start at 3.30 p.m.
