Shukla helps SAIL defeat G G Dutt

NEW DELHI, May 4: Powered by Saurabh Shukla's all-round performance, Steel Authority of India moved into the quarter-finals of the Goswami Ganesh Dutt memorial tournament at Hindu College here today when they defeated the hosts by 87 runs.

Put in to bat, SAIL made 217 in 37.2 overs. Shukla made 41 while former Delhi Ranji Trophy skipper K P Bhaskar contributed a useful 43 off 52 balls. Ajit Singh (27), P Mullick (25) and Parida (24) were the other main contributors. Medium pacer Surinder Damia and left-arm spinner Sant Ram claimed three wickets each.

In reply, G G Dutt were dismissed for 130 in 34.3 overs. In fact, they lost their first six batsmen with only 40 runs on the board in the 15th over. They could never recover from that. Only Sarvesh Bhatnagar (59) and Sant Ram (19) could face the SAIL attack with some confidence. Oniel Wilson, Tejinder Singh and Shukla claimed two wickets each while Surinder Singh capturted three.

Saurabh Shukla was named the man of the match. SAIL will take on D S Group in the quarterfinals.

Suraj shines
Suraj's all-round display and Balveer Singh's fine bowling spell helped Abhai Ram Gymkhana beat Ramjas Institute by 25 runs in the Ramesh Chand tournament at Ashok Vihar.

Brief scores: AR Gymkhana 250 (Tarun Das 46, Suraj 36, Shiv Kumar 27, Tilak Raj 3 for 30) bt Ramjas Institute 225 for 9 (Hitesh Manocha 40, Tilak Raj 39, Suraj 3 for 28, Balveer 3 for 12).
