Selection of hockey team for Germany on May 6

CHANDIGARH, MAY 4: Forty-nine players out of 57 have reported for the national hockey coaching camp-cum-trials being held at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here. According to Indian Hockey Federation chief co-ordinator Avtar Singh Kohli, an Indian team for Germany will be selected on May 6. The trials will be conducted in the morning and evening sessions. The selection trials may be extended to May 7, if required, said Kohli.

The second phase of the camp was scheduled to be held at NIS Patiala from May 3 but it was shifted to Chandigarh at the eleventh hour as no accommodation was available in Patiala with a number of coaching camps going on there. Further, in the absence of proper communication between IHF and Sports Authority of India, the change in the venue was necessistated. The Chandigarh Sports Department willingly accepted the IHF offer for the second phase of the camp.

Suresh Harmilapi, Director Incharge, SAI Northern Centre, received the sanction of the hockey camp for 57 players and three coacheson May 3, the day the camp began. The sanction of the camp is from May 3 to 9. However, it is learnt that ``the camp will continue till the team leaves for Germany in the first week of June.'' A diet money of Rs 104 per player has been sanctioned by the SAI while the IHF has also sanctioned the equal amount for diet of the players.

Rajinder Singh (Delhi), Balwinder Singh (Amritsar), Satinder Singh (Chandigarh) and Sushil Kumar (Rampur) are attached with the camp. They were incharge of their respective physical conditioning camps (first phase). Former chief Indian hockey coach Harmik Singh has expressed his inability to attend the camp as he is busy with his teaching assignments at NIS Patiala.

The IHF had selected 73 players for the first coaching camps at different centres. Ten-11 players at each centre attended the physical conditioning camps. Harbhajan Singh, Qureshi and Baljeet Chandi are among the nine players who were later asked to join the camps by the IHF.

The probables play practice matcheshere in the morning and evening sessions. The first 50-minute match this evening was played between IHF Blues and IHF Whites. Edward Aloysis, Rajinder Singh, Anurag, Baljit Saini, Anwar, Ramandeep, Harbhajan (Kamal Horo), Mukesh, Deepak, Sameer Dad and Baljit Dhillon comprised the IHF Blues team. The Whites consisted of Ravinder, Rajinder Junior, Kuljeet, Sukhbir Gill, Navsher, Sarabjeet Singh, Iqbal, Gagan Ajit Singh (Paramjit), Prabhjot and Daljeet Dhillon.

Daljit Dhillon opened the account for Whites while Harbhajan neutralised the lead. The prupose behind the excercise is to watch the `steps of the players' before the selection trials.

Another match was organised between Blues XI and Whites XI. Darvesh Chauhan (Nanu), Jasbir Singh, Minz (Pardeep Singh), Sunil Yadav, Sonnu, Adolf, Navbeer, Hasrat Qureshi, Amanjeet Pratap, Rajpal (Navdeep), Arshad (Parminder) formed the Blues team. Basanta Singh, Bikramjit Singh, Sharanjit Singh, Errol D'Silva, Paramjit, Gursewak, Baljit Chandi, Ayam, Ajinderpal andAjit Pal were in the Whites team.

Meanwhile, the IHF will also send another team to South Africa in August to participate in the Independence Day Cup.
