Youth gets life term for killing grandfather

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, MAY 6: Additional Sessions Judge M L Tahiliyani on Wednesday sentenced a youth to life imprisonment for murdering his maternal grandfather in 1993. However, his mother and brother, who were accused of the same offence, were acquitted by the judge due to lack of evidence.

According to Special Public Prosecutor Salim Merchant, Dattatraya Anant Morajkar lived along with his wife Satyawati and son Anant in a room at Datta Mandir, Malad (east). Earlier, his daughter Sumitra Jadhav, her husband Chandrakant and sons Mahendra, Santosh and Suraj would also live with them. Sumitra had requested her father to transfer the room in her name on several ocassions, but he refused.

In 1998, Sumitra and Chandrakant reportedly assaulted Dattatray and his wife over the issue of transfer of the room. They were arrested by the Dindoshi police and later released on bail. The case is still pending in the Borivli metropolitan court.

In 1993, Sumitra and her family shifted to Nausoba Wadi, but reportedly they continuedto visit the Morajkars and threaten them. On October 26, 1993, Mahendra barged into his grandfather's house and assaulted him with a hockey stick. Mahendra then allegedly whipped out a knife and stabbed his grandfather several times in the chest and abdomen. Morajkar died on the way to hospital. While Mahendra was arrested on October 26, Sumitra was arrested on October 27 and Santosh on November 9, 1993 for conspiracy.

Judge Tahilyani sentenced Mahendra to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000. Sumitra and Santosh have been acquitted.
