MUMBAI, MAY 7: Ever wondered about the small size of the compartment reserved for the physically handicapped in the suburban locals? A father of a physically handicapped, Gajanan Dhonde on Thursday moved the Bombay High Court in a public interest litigation seeking the court's intervention to expand the compartment.A division bench of Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice S Radhakrishnan directed a committee with members of the Railways and the All India Institute of Rehabilitation of the Physically Handicapped, Haji Ali to go into the problem and submit a report within six weeks. The next hearing is scheduled on July 15.
In his petition Dhonde, whose son Sameer Dhonde is physically handicapped, has claimed that the compartment reserved for the handicapped is actually a motorman's cabin and is ill-equipped to handle the numerous handicapped persons travelling by trains. As such only six to eight persons can sit in these cubicles. He has prayed that the court direct the Indian Railways to provide alarger compartment capable of accommodating at least about 30 to 35 persons.
He has also brought the court's notice towards the narrow door of these `compartments' that make it difficult for the genuinely and majorly handicapped persons to enter.
