CHANDIGARH, May 7: The shramdan to desilt Sukhna Lake began here today to a lukewarm response. It was inaugurated by UT Adviser Vineeta Rai at the regulator end of the lake. Rai and Home Secretary Anuradha Gupta surprised everyone by arriving on the spot well before time and by inaugurating the shramdan at the slated time of 7 a.m.Both the officials exhibited great enthusiasm towards the shramdan, unlike the volunteers, who turned out in small number for the event.
Besides the morning joggers, there was a small gathering of school children. The Chandigarh Chapter of the Environment Society of India also pitched in. These children carried out the shramdan only after the officials had left. However, the place earmarked for the shramdan was virtually deserted later, which can be explained by the fact, that this time, the shramdan is a complete voluntary effort unlike the shramdan of 1988.
K. K. Adiwal, the mayor of the city, arrived a little late, missing the formal inauguration like many other visitors. Other officials who were present at the spot were M. Ramshekhar, the Deputy Commissioner and Satish Chandra, Managing Director, Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO).
The Adviser also inaugurated the mechanical shramdan in which a dragline, two earth-movers and 14 tippers of Municipal Corporation and Engineering department of UT, Bhakra Beas Management Board and Haryana Irrigation department are being used to remove the silt.
