Zirakpur constable crushed to death

DERA BASSI, May 7: A 23-year old constable of Zirakpur sub-police station succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday after being hit by a truck while performing official duty at Zirakpur, on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway.

According to the police, constable Avtar Singh was on traffic duty when the incident occurred. He was trying to stop a truck when its driver ran him over and after abandoning the truck on the highway, fled away. The truck was later impounded by the police. The driver is still at large.

The dead body of the constable was consigned to the flames at his native village, Khalor, under Banur police station. DSP H.S. Bhullar visited the family to pay his condolences and laid a wreath on the pyre of the deceased. Avtar Singh is survived by his wife, 6-month old daughter and parents.

Meanwhile, Bhullar has asked the concerned SHO to provide all details relating to Avtar Singh and his family for the payment of dues at the earliest.
