CHANDIGARH, May 7: The general body meeting of the Chandigarh Club called to pass accounts of 1992-93 and also to debate on the report of an inquiry committee constituted to probe the allegations of irregularities against the club's ex-president P.S. Sethi witnessed noisy scenes today.Supporters of Sethi and members of the inquiry committee made so much noise that it became difficult for club president C.L. Sharma to address the house.
The present managing body, before adjourning the house, declared that while the accounts had been passed, Sethi had been suspended from membership of the club due to irregularities committed during his tenure. There was talk of suspending and lodging an FIR against club secretary Jaspinder Singh also.
Refuting the charges, Sethi termed the committee report "totally biased and negative." The charge that Sethi had been suspended was also refuted strongly by many senior club members who called it "absolutely illegal" and said no such motion had been passed.
There was resentment about the manner in which the meeting had been conducted, where a lot of noise became a substitute for an organised debate. The club is going to elect a new managing body tomorrow and the two presidential candidates include C.L. Sharma and Harish Dhawan.
