Naib Tehsildar arrested for graft
Patiala: A vigilance party, headed by DSP Ranjit Singh Dhillon, (vigilance flying squad) today raided the office of Naib Tehsildar Prem Lata, Nabha, and caught her red-handed while taking Rs 2,000 bribe. According to the Vigilance Department sources the raid was conducted on the instructions of SP B.K. Uppal, Vigilance, and on a complaint of Paramjit Singh of Kallel village, under Bhadson police station. The Naib Tehsildar was arrested and a case registered her. She may be produced before a magistrate tomorrow.

Two buried alive while digging well
Patiala: Two persons, identified as Jaswinder Kumar and Jaipal of Badouli Khurad village (Ghanour block), died at Surajgarh village, under Banur police station, while digging a well. According to the information reaching here, both the persons died when a portion of the earth caved in and they were buried under it. According to sources, though efforts were made to save them and even cranes were pressed into service, they could not be saved.

13 hurt in truck-bus collision
Kharar: Thirteen bus passengers were injured, five of them seriously, and two buffaloes were killed and twoinjured when a Tata-407 truck collided head-on with a Pepsu Road Transport bus on Kharar-Kurali highway near Sahoran village, about five km from here this morning. The injured, including the bus driver Paramjit Singh, were rushed to the Kharar Civil Hospital. Those with with serious injuries were kept under observation, while those with minor injuries were discharged after being administered first-aid. According to the polices sources, the accident took place when a speeding Tata-407 truck carrying buffaloes, on its way from Kurali towards Kharar, collided with a Pepsu Road Transport bus coming from the opposite direction. The Kharar police have registered a case under sections 279/337/427 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code against the truck driver Ram Rattan. The accused has been arrested and the vehicles involved in the mishap impounded by the police.

Chlorination of potable water ordered
Kharar: The Municipal Councils of Kharar and Kurali have been directed by Kharar Sub-Divisional Magistrate A.S. Dhindsa to chlorinate the potable water being supplied to the residents and improve the deteriorating sanitary conditions in their respective areas. He has also directed the conducting of spray of insecticides to check the breeding of mosquitoes and flies. He was addressing a special meeting on the prevention of malaria at his office here yesterday, in which the MC executive officers, Health Department officials and representatives of some Non-Government Organisations participated. He asked the Health Department officials to ensure adequate arrangements to conduct malaria test and provide medicines for the prevention and cure of malaria. The cooperation of NGOs was also sought.

Traffic awareness camp today
Kharar: A traffic awareness camp is being organised by the Kharar Rotary Club in collaboration with the district transport authorities on the Kharar-Chandigarh highway near Civil Rest House here tomorrow. Club secretary H.S. Rekhi said Kharar DSP Ashwani Kapoor will inaugurate the camp in which reflectors on tractor-trollies will be put.
