Nabha MC chief loses no-trust vote, resigns

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NABHA, May 7: Nabha Municipal Council president Sarupa Singla, who headed a minority Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiromani Akali Dal alliance led MC, was removed from her post today, when she failed to gain support from supporting members, while facing a Congress sponsored no-confidence motion.

The meeting to take up the no-confidence motion started at 11 a.m. and was attended by 19 out of the 21 members of the Council. While 16 members of the Congress voted in favour of the motion, the three BJP members voted against, and the lone SAD representative kept away.

Initially, it seemed that the meeting might have to be postponed in the absence of an observer, but Sarupa Singla said she had no objection to the meeting being conducted in the absence of an observer. When voting was conducted, Sarupa Singla lost the no-confidence motion by 16-3. She accepted the decision of the House and put in her papers.

One seat fell vacant due to the resignation of BJP member, Sandeep Jadeka, who got government job and resigned. Sukhdev Singh Dhillon, MC executive officer, said the House may take up the issue of conducting the election for the post of vice-president next week.

Ramesh Singla, former MLA and general secretary of PPCC, said that the PPCC may appoint a observer to decide the issue and know the views of all councillors.
