AIIMS doctors to assist inquiry into expired drug use

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, May 7: The Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has constituted a six-member medical board to assist the probe of the alleged use of expired drugs and devices. The alleged usage had lead to the death of several patients at the G.B. Pant hospital.

While submitting a progress report before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), R.K. Gauba, the Investigating Officer of the case, Ramesh Chander, submitted that the board was formed on Wednesday. The IO has been directed to submit another progress report on July 3.

The board has been constituted following the CMM's last order, passed on April 16. DCP Crime and Railways was directed to write a letter to the Dircetor AIIMS, requesting to constitute the board. The committee comprises of Dr. Pradeep Seth, Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology, Dr. S.K. Gupta, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Dr Chandralekha, Professor (Anaesthesia), Dr. O.P Malhotra Professor (Medicine), Dr. V.K Bahl, Professor (Cardiology) and Dr. R.K Sharma, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic medicine.

The nominee of the drug controller, R.D. Garg also informed the court about the appointment of a drug inspector who would assist the investigations by scrutinising the drugs.

The earlier committee that included members from the Maulana Azad Medical College and LNJP hospital was relieved after its members expressed reluctance to continue. On perusal of the report, the CMM had last found that the committee had conducted only three meetings to discuss the problem and that no action had been taken.

The committee constituted by the Delhi Government was relieved during the case's last hearing due to the ``helplessness'' shown by the Director, Health Services, in view of most of the committee members expressing their inability to carry out investigation.
