The district police started collecting details on the activities of auto thieves and car-jackers after complaintst in the Kalyanpuri sub-division. First, Rafi was arrested from Kalyanpuri.

On sustained interrogation, Rafi confessed to his involvement in nine cases of motor vehicle theft that was reported from Preet Vihar, Shakarpur, Anand Vihar, Kalyanpuri, Parliament Street, Connaught Place, and Vikaspuri. He also revealed the whereabouts of his other associates which led to their subsequent arrest.
