Cops question waiter after boss sees Most Wanted

Arif A Khan
FARIDABAD, May 7: A week after an episode of Zee TV's India's Most Wanted, the district police whisked away a waiter from a highway hotel near Palwal for questioning. The man is suspected of killing four members of a businessman's family in Yamuna Nagar last year.

He is still being questioned today at the Sector 7 Police Post and what has come out of it has been kept a closely-guarded secret by the district police. The police are reluctant to identify him on record. But, according to police sources, the waiter has given his name as Mohammad Sajjad. He told them that he is from Madhepura, in Bihar. But official records say that the accused in the case -- the victims' domestic help Bablu -- is from Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh.

``The waiter resembles a photograph of the accused. He, however, has not divulged anything important to the case,'' said the Senior Superintendent of Police Mohammad Akil. He added that a police team from Yamunanagar would be arriving tomorrow with prime witness Vinod Kumar to identify the suspect.

The drama began last night, after a docu-drama based on the recent murder of four persons of the family of Sardar Mohan Singh of Yamunanagar, was telecast on India's Most Wanted last Tuesday.

According to sources, Ramesh Kumar, owner of Hotel Highway Special, near Kuslipur village in Palwal had watched the programme. And yesterday, he decided to send a fax to the office of India's Most Wanted. He told them that a man of the same description as the accused in the episode was one of his waiters.

Ramesh Kumar also informed the local police about the presence of the suspected killer in his hotel.

``We informed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Faridabad,'' said Omair Ilyasi, co-producer of the series. Butt the police are only willing to say that the man was taken away for questioning. They did not want to use the word `custody', but instead preferred to say he was under observation.

On the intervening night of September 2-3 last year, Sardar Mohan Singh (38), his wife Taranjit Kaur (35), daughter Kulwant Kaur (15) and son Harlin (10) were battered to death allegedly by four persons, including domestic help, Bablu.

The incident occurred at Singh's residence. On the ground floor, the family ran a steel-utensils' manufacturing unit. Vinod Kumar, manager of the unit, was reportedly the only eyewitness to the incident.

The police now suspect that domestic help Bablu is the waiter working in Highway Special.

According to sources, the murder was act of revenge. He was reportedly dismissed from his job by Mohan Singh a few months prior to the incident. The family later took him back.

On the night of the incident, Bablu, was working in the ground floor unit. He had allegedly let in three of his associates Kamlesh, Pawan and Gopal. He then called up Singh on the pretext that some of the machines were giving him trouble. When Singh came down, the four allegedly pounced on him.

They bludgeoned Singh and after making sure that he was dead, the killers then went up to the first floor and killed Singh's wife, daughter and son. They were also battered to death.

The manager of the unit, Vinod Kumar who had come to unit that night was reportedly an eyewitness to the crime. He, however, managed to escape.
