Another car thief who loves Marutis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, May 7: At least 14 cars had been reported stolen from Patel Nagar in west Delhi since the beginning of this year. And till last week, the district police had no clue that Priston Gomes and his gang were behind most of the thefts.

When they finally arrested him on April 27, they found that he and his friends had actually stolen 37 vehicles in all, some even from from other west Delhi areas like Tilak Nagar and Moti Nagar. The police claim to have recovered 14 of these vehicles after his arrest.

According police, Gomes' arrest followed steps to check the increase in vehicle thefts from these areas. A special team headed by the ACP (Patel Nagar) was constituted to identify the thieves. And scrutiny of records revealed that Priston Gomes, originally a car mechanic, had a history of cases regarding car theft and snatching.

On April 27, around 11:30 a.m, the police received a tip-off that Gomes and his associate Javed would pass through Prem Nagar via a water pumping station in the area. They arrested both men, who were found travelling on a stolen Yamaha bike.

When the police questioned Gomes and Javed, they reportedly confessed to stealing vehicles from Patel Nagar, Moti Nagar and Tilak Nagar areas. And their favorite vehciles were Marutis. The police have recovered five Maruti cars and one van, besides five motor cycles and three scooters from them.

In a separate case, the west Delhi police arrested a youth, Ramesh Kumar, who was also riding a stolen two- wheeler. And in a third instance, the police arrested two other youths Sanjay and Virender Kumar for driving a stolen bike. Sanjay is wanted in four cases of snatching and four cases of burglary.
