Yo-Yo -- Pune

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Keeping track of the snakes and ladders' score this week
Up
Revival of cultural heritage, With the nagaras (kettle drums) reverberating in front of the historic Shaniwarwada everyday, between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. and at the Lal Mahal between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Quite literally, this is history in the making.

Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, As it restores water supply to Dapodi residents. Ever since the Pune Municipal Corporation disconnected its water supply to this area since April 1, the Dapodi residents were having a harrowing time, especially with the increasing temperatures. Now that sufficient water is reaching every home, the denizens here can heave a sigh of relief.

Irrigation Minister Eknath Khadse, As he gave the green signal for a ramp to be constructed between the Lakdi Pul and Gadgil Bridge and also between the former and Chavan bridge for parking of two- and four-wheelers. Nearly 35,000 square feet of irrigation land will be used for this project, which is hoped to solve parking problems on Laxmi, Kelkar and Tilak Roads to a considerable extent.

Pune Municipal Corporation, For its vigilant action against hospitals who do not dispose off waste in the prescribed manner. The staff of reputed hospitals like Joshi Hospital, Inlaks & Budhrani Hospital and Ruby Hall Clinic too have been hauled up for improper disposal of hospital waste such as used syringes, saline bottles and bandages.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Board, For promising power-packed days during the World Cup matches, ensuring uninterrupted television-viewing. While cricket lovers rejoice, wish the same had happened during the board examinations.

Down
Railway Travel, That is becoming increasingly unsafe. Thousands of commuters, on board the Mumbai-Chennai Express, were stranded on the Pune railway station for several hours, thanks to a bomb hoax. A few hours earlier, the Mumbai-Kanyakumari Jayanti Janata Express had been caught in a similar situation at the Kurdwadi railway station. This, coupled with increasing incidents of robbery on board, certainly makes travelling by this convenient mode of transport risky.

Cricket Passion, That cost a city youngster his life. Nineteen year old Atul Awachat had to pay very dearly for an appeal made against Amit Shinde, the star batsman of the rival cricket club. The ensuing free-for-all concluded with Amit using a bat to hit Atul, a wound that proved to be fatal. Quite clearly, not a gentleman's attitude.

Negligent attitude of the workers of the Pune Municipal Corporation's sewerage department toward their own life, As they refuse to use safety masks. Following the death of two workers on inhaling toxic gases from a choked sewer, the PMC purchased 50 safety masks and 30 helmets, only to have them refused by the workers on the field. Given the risk their health faces, they have nobody to blame but themselves.
