May 7: Thane boys paid Mumbai North a heady tribute by `tanking' their league match against Sangli in the Maharashtra State Junior Basketball championship at Fr Agnel Complex today morning. The 47-60 loss, in a match for placements, ensured Thane finished second from Pool F, preventing a possible semi-final showdown with heavyweight, defending champions Mumbai North.1But the strategy boomeranged. Thane were whipped 69-50 by Mumbai Central in the pre-quarterfinal, ending their dreams of a final berth two phases earlier. Ironically, poolmates Sangli had an easy run into tomorrow's quarter-final, beating Kolhapur 55-27.
Favourites Mumbai North, Mumbai South-East, Mumbai South-West and Pune directly qualified for the quarter-finals by topping their leagues.Thane girls defeated Mumbai Central 35-24 to enter the semis. They were joined by Nagpur, who accounted for Pune 55-43.
Thane's plans came unstuck due to foul trouble. An aggressive half press against Central took its toll, tall pivots Anup Nair andcaptain Dheeraj forced out with five fouls apiece. Avinash Nair followed them out, while top scorer Binoy (37) stuck on with four against his name.
