New Delhi/LUCKNOW, May 10: Dissident MLAs in Uttar Pradesh got a slap in the face today as the Bharatiya Janata Party high command decided against taking any action against Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. Ignoring the one-week ultimatum served by the rebels for the CM's removal, the BJP top brass ruled out his replacement after Kalyan had an hour-long meeting with the party president Kushabhau Thakre, according to spokesman J P Mathur.Kalyan Singh, who was summoned here, said he had been assured by the party president that there would be no change of leadership and the issues raised by the dissidents would be resolved amicably.
The Thakre-Kalyan Singh meeting came three days after 33 dissident BJP MLAS met the party president and submitted their resignation from the Assembly and demanded immediate removal of the Chief Minister.
When they received no prompt response from Thakre, they returned to Lucknow and served the party a deadline, saying that they would chart their next course of action after May 15if the high command did not concede to their demand.
Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram that the party's central leadership had already conveyed to the dissident MLAs that there would be no change of leadership in Uttar Pradesh.
Joshi said Home Minister L K Advani would be going to Lucknow on May 16 to sort out the problem. Advani's proposed visit to Uttar Pradesh for the two-day state party executive meeting here on May 15 and 16 is being regarded as crucial in party circles in view of the ongoing dissident activities in the State.
