Rare kidney transplantation performed

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
MADURAI, May 14: In what is described as a rare feat, a `cadaver double renal transplantation' was successfully performed on two patients simultaneously by a team of doctors at the private Sri Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, Dr K Sampathkumar, consultant nephrologist said here today.

He said that doctors transplanted the kidneys of a 46-year old woman, who suffered head injury and was reported brain-dead, into the two patients after an ``eight-hour'' surgery on May 7.

The two patients, who received dialysis for renal transplantation, were also tested for ``cross matching'' before the kidneys were transplanted. Both were recovering, he added.
