SAD delegation meets IGP
A delegation of the local unit of SAD led by its president Gurpartap Singh Riar today met the UT IGP Kiran Bedi in Chandigarh and submitted a copy of the memorandum given to the Adviser earlier, seeking an enquiry into the functioning of the Home Secretary about her interference in the police functioning.The SAD also lamented the alleged interference by the Home Secretary in the police functioning.1.66 lakh cubic feet silt removed
More than 1.66 lakh cubic feet of silt had been removed from the dry bed of the Sukhna Lake till yesterday by way of manual and mechanical shramdaan. According to a press release issued in Chandigarh today, the work of desilting this year has been slow as no machinery had so far arrived from Punjab and BBMB. Only the machinery of the municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has been engaged in the removal of silt by mechanical operation. The regular shramdaan at the Lake is, however, continuing and so far 630 cubic feet of silt has been removed.
Mazdoor Ekta for better facilities
A deputation of UT Mazdoor Ekta Welfare Committee, Dadu Majra Colony, met Superintendent Engineer Manmohanjit Singh, Public Health and Buildings & Roads, to apprise him of the lack of civic amenities in the area. They demanded fresh carpeting of roads, shifting of garbage dumping sites and improvement in the water supply to the colony. Ramesh Kumar, committee chief said the proposed gherao of the city Mayor for May 15 has been called off.
Woman killed
Harinder Kaur Oberoi, alias Nikki, died on the spot when her scooter collided with a truck near Phase XI gurdwara in Mohali on Wednesday. Truck driver Sat Narayan has been arrested and a case under sections 279 and 304-A IPC registered in the Phase VIII Police Station. The victim is survived by her husband, a son (14) and a daughter (9).
Workshop for kids
A theatre workshop for children, in the age group of four to 18, will be held at the Raj Kala Mandir on the Rajasthan Parishad premises in Sector 33, Chandigarh, from May 20. Conducted by Kainat Arts, the workshop will be in two batches and the second batch will start on June 1. According to Kuldeep Kaur, director of Kainat Arts, the workshop will consist of voice culture, psychological interaction and body movements through yoga, aerobics and exercises. The workshop will culminate in a performance at the Tagore Theatre on June 26.
