Sector 41 traders demand removal of rehri market

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, May 14: Even after a span 10 years, Sector 41-D market is bereft of basic amenities.

There is acute shortage of drinking water and the market is sans public toilets. as there was no toilet in the market. In the absence of a parking lot, consumers and traders park their vehicles at random causing inconvenience to the public besides flouting traffic regulations. Interestingly, the market has no post office or even a bank. Adding to the woes of the trading community, there are no streetlights either, even though electricity poles were installed about a year back. This sorry state of affairs despite the fact that it is represented in the MC by former mayor Kamla Sharma.

A leading businessman of the city, T.K. Kansal, who owns a shop in market, points out at a parallel rehri market that has been functioning for the last couple of years under political patronage. A small roundabout adjoining the market, has been encroached partially by the phari-owners. It poses a grave danger to those using the road. There is hardly a day when an accident is not reported from the site.

Another shopkeeper, Dinesh recalls a fatal road accident involving a scooterist.

The traders accuse the Administration of delaying the rehabilation of 102 rehri owners, even though it has given an undertaking in the High Court that this unauthorised market will be removed shortly. Traders have to wade through knee-deep water to reach their shops whenever it rains. They say the MC officials have been notified about it a number of times, but no remedial measures have been taken so far.

They demanded that the Administration prepare a time-bound programme for the removal of the rehri owners who have been allotted an alternate site. The traders have served a 15-day ultimatum to the Administration for redressal of grievances, failing which they will stage a dharna in front of Deputy Commissioner M. Ramsekhar's office. They further added that they would soon meet UT Adviser Vineeta Rai in this regard.
