Nurses hold rally, threaten to intensify agitation

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PATIALA, May 14: At a rally today, the Punjab Nurses Association threatened to intensify its agitation if the state government does not fulfill its demands soon.

Nurses and student nurses from various hospitals participated in the rally organised at Government Rajindra Hospital. Jiwanpreet Kaur, president of the association, said that the state government had failed to keep its word and had adopted an indifferent attitude towards their genuine demands.

She made an open appeal to Bibi Jagir Kaur, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to personally intervene in the matter.

Later, Jiwanpret Kaur told ENS that during the last elections, the nurses had voted in favour of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party alliance in the state. If their demands were not accepted soon, the association may decide to vote against the alliance during forthcoming elections.

The rally was addressed by Satya Jain, propaganda secretary, Paramjit Kamboj, from the State Treasurers Association, Harminder Ghuman, local president of the association, and Baljit Kaur and Sneh Lata, student nurses.

Function put off
Patiala: The Dr Ravi Memorial Trust has decided to postpone its annual function from May 19, 1999 to September 1999. The Dr Ravi Award will be presented on this occasion, said Harcharan Singh, general secretary of the trust.
