NEW DELHI, May 14: Additional Sessions Judge R.C. Yaduvanshi today convicted Manjit Singh, accused in the murder of criminal lawyer Baba Gurcharan Singh, to life imprisonment. Manjit Singh had been declared guilty on Wednesday and had acquitted the other two persons, Jerry and Ajay Tomer.The judge turned down the arguments of the prosecution for a death penalty. The judge, however, passed directions against the Investigating Officer of the case. He pulled him up for not holding proper investigations. He also told Jerry, one of the two acqutted accused persons, to demand compensation from the IO, for being falsely charged.
Jerry who was actually responsible for destroying the evidence (201) was arrested for murder (302). Therefore, Jerry was illegally confined to judicial custody, the judge held. Earlier, Subhash Bhuttan, the complainant's counsel had pleaded for a death penalty since it was a cold blooded murder. He apprised the court about Singh's involvement in various cases including murder and extortion.
