Anti-corruption drive to undergo major restructuring - Hazare

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, May 14: Admitting that the drive against corruption had received a major set-back because of the dismissal of the committees in 259 talukas and 27 districts in the State, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare on Thursday was confident that the drive would emerge as a national movement in the four months.

Anna Hazare who was delivering a lecture on `Changing social scenario' at Vasant Vyakhanmala here revealed that all the committees to probe into corruption at the taluka and district levels had been dismissed when they realised that irregularities had crept into their functioning. ``We will take stock of the situation in the next four months and take a final decision on restructuring the movement on the basis of the reports,'' he explained.

Hazare was clear that he had no personal vendetta against either Babanrao Gholap or Shashikant Sutar who were dismissed from their ministries for indulging in corruption. He described the recent campaign against the former two ministers as a movement against the brazen attitudes that had crept into the social fabric of the nation.

The current situation in the country had occurred due to deteriorating family values, ethics and social responsibility. The absence of leadership has occurred chiefly due to the unwillingness to swallow insults. The nation has lost a number of workers who have lost heart along the road because of their inability to put up with hardships.

Hazare ruled out the possibility of joining politics and explained that it was far more easier to work from outside rather than attempt to get things done as part of the inner circle. In reply to a query, he categorically stated that he had targeted the saffron alliance government but was the first to begin a crusade against Congress leader Sharad Pawar. ``I did not accept the Padmashri award and the Vrikshamitra award and had taken a vow of silence for 42 days after which the government was forced to relent and take action against the corrupt officials of the forestry department,'' he said.

He agreed that the `Z' security offered to him was a waste of money and hoped that the government would withdraw this facility.
