Thackeray junior - Time to preserve Kelkar legacy

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, May 14: It is an unrealised dream of a man driven by a passion for collecting antiques. While Kakasaheb Kelkar, founder of the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Musuem, managed to collect over 20,000 priceless curios, his dream to house this entire collection under a single roof remains unfulfilled after all these years. Only 2500 artifacts can be accommodated at the musuem for the want of space.

Unwilling to give up the battle so easily, his grandson S Ranade has submitted an ambitious proposal named ``Musuem 2000'' to the Maharashtra Government using high technology to display the artifacts in a scientific manner. Planned over an expanse of ten acres, the Museum 2000 project not only plans a proper display of the one-man collection, but will also attempts to recreate the grandeur of Mastani Mahal, besides an Institute of Musuemology and Fine Arts. An exhibition centre, a hostel, modern auditorium and a library are also part of the project.

Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray who was very receptive to the idea of setting up a modern Museum of this kind has assured all help for this project. Thackeray, who unveiled the bust of Kakasaheb Kelkar today to mark his birth centenary celebrations, expressed grave concern over the fast disappearing traditions of the past and maintained that the saffron alliance government would make all efforts to preserve the rich legacy of our culture.

Stating that this was his second visit to the museum, Thackeray said that the priceless collection made him restless by the inability of the present generation to preserve the rich traditions. Referring to the appeal made by the trustees earlier for allocation of land for setting up Museum 2000, Thackeray said he had already spoken to Minister for Cultural Affairs Pramod Navalkar on this issue.

Well-known ophthalmologist Dr Shreekant Kelkar presided while Dr H G Ranade, honorary director and secretary delivered the introductory address.
