Homoeo drug to control eosinophilia on the anvil

HIMANSU S SAHOO
BHUBANESWAR, May 14: For the first time in the State, a research team of Dr Abhin Chandra Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital is preparing the scientific documentation of the application of a new drug `Eosinophili' developed by the College for the treatment of Tropical Eosinophilia. Eosinophil is a type of white blood cell. The research is being sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The drug has been developed by a team comprising Materia Medica professor and principal of the college, Prof Chaturbhuja Nayak, head of Pharmacy Department Dr Akshaya Kumar Mishra and two research fellows of the college Dr Samarendra Prasad Mishra and Dr RK Dash. The research fellows are also assisted by pathology specialist of the college Dr DP Rath. The documentation work, which started in 1998 with a target to cover the case history of 1,000 eosinophilia patients, is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

Treatment:

Prof Nayak informed that duringdocumentation, the patients are provided free treatment at the hospital. The treatment consists of recording the mental make up and physical attributes of the patient, his reaction and response to environmental stimuli and constitution.

The patient's absolute total eosinophilia Count (AC) and differential count (DC) blood tests are conducted and the acquired symptoms are then matched with the potency of `Eosinophili' which determines the dosage to be administered, Nayak said. The period of observation varies from a fortnight to a month depending on the intensity of the disease.

Medicine: According to Dr Akshaya Kumar Mishra, `Eosinophili' was prepared in 1989 from the blood cells of a patient having 78 per cent of eosinophilia whereas the normal eosinophilia account is 10 per cent. The drug is prepared by first drawing the serum from the blood cell and then tirturating it with sugar milk (lactose). Then `Eosinophili' is prepared by the method of potentiation, he said.

Mishra further informed thatthe first application of the medicine was conducted in 1997 on a 30-year old having 66 per cent of eosinophilia account. The patient was kept under homeopathic observation and was given `Eosinophili' doses continuously for seven days following which he was recorded with only 7 per cent of eosinophilia account, Mishra added.

To add efficiency to the research a miniature `proving' was also conducted in the college where 23 healthy persons were given `Eosinophili' and the effects were observed. At the end of the `proving' it was recorded that none of the persons had developed any side effects of the medicine, hospital sources said.

After the submission of the achievement report and the approval of the drug by well known medicine practitioners of the Twin City, the State Government had sanctioned Rs 25,000 in 1996 of which Rs 19,000 has already been received by the College. After submission of the documentation paper, the data will be handed over to the State Government which will determine the release of`Eosinophili' to the market.
