Woman out on stroll run over by bus

Navneet Kaur
NEW DELHI, May 17: Yesterday was like any other night for Madhu and R.L. Ganglani, when they they went out for a stroll after dinner. They walked towards Pragati Apartments, not very far from BG-3 block in Paschim Vihar, west Delhi, where they live. Only, on their way back, as they waited on the divider to cross the road, a DTC bus came at break-neck speed from behind, hit 40-year-old Madhu (almost dragging her with it), hit an electric pole and sped away.

Madhu has been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of Maharaja Agrasen Hospital with multiple fracture injuries, waiting for a blood donation.Remembers, R.L. Ganglani: ``I somehow managed to escape, but Madhu couldn't. The bus hit her from behind, then sped away.'' And since it all happened in a flash, Ganglani said he could not take down the number of the bus. All he could make out was that it was a DTC bus, route number 529. ``Madhu, I realised suddenly, was not by my side. My thought was to find her. I was too shaken up to note the number.'' A resident of block BG-5 came to their help. He volunteered to take Madhu the Maharaja Agrasen hospital nearby.

It has not been an easy night for Ganglani. Madhu had lost a lot of blood, besides sustaining multiple fractures in her hip and thigh. Doctors said she needed three pints of blood (group B positive) and the blood was not available. Ganglani was also angry that the police were the last to arrive. ``We got Madhu to the hospital at 9.50 p.m. and the police arrived at around 3.30 in the morning,'' he said.

According to the police, the case came to their notice only when Madhu was admitted to the hospital, which falls under a different police station. Upon checking, it was found that the accident had taken place in the Punjabi Bagh area and the case was then registered with the Punjabi Bagh police station.

The police said that they have detained about six or seven buses in this regard and are on a look-out for more. They added, however, that the DTC bus, route number 529, does not ply in this area. ``We are checking other bus route numbers as well. As for this route number, it does not ply in this area and it is quite possible that the bus driver had finished for the day and was on his way to park somewhere,'' added an official.
