On June 6, 1997 three police officers raided a flat in Rajaram Wadi, Bandra on a tip-off that a narcotic deal was to take place. The police officers had to grapple with three African nationals, one of whom snatched the service revolver of Investigating officer Sadashiv Asawale and fired at the police. After three bullets missed the officers, the fourth hit Investigating Officer Surendra Kavitkar in his waist.
